Private Sewing Classes in Abu Dhabi, and Why Not a Group

People search for a sewing club near them, and then they write to ask which evening my group meets. I do not have one. Every lesson I teach is one student at a time, and that is a decision rather than a limitation.

What a group class does to the learning

Picture eight machines and one teacher. Everything in that room comes down to arithmetic.

Your bobbin thread knots under the plate in the first ten minutes. The teacher is at the far end helping someone else, so you sit and wait. When she reaches you, she unpicks it, explains it once, and moves on to the next raised hand. You did not learn to fix it. You learned to wait for someone who can.

The pace belongs to the middle of the room. If you pick things up quickly you spend half the term bored. If you need a second run at something you fall behind quietly and stop asking, because eight people are waiting.

And everyone makes the same thing. A tote bag, a cushion cover, whatever the syllabus says this month. That is fine if it happens to be what you wanted. Usually it is not.

What you get instead

The programme is yours. That is the whole difference.

You tell me what you want to be able to make, and we work towards that from the first lesson. One student wants a dress for a specific event with a date on it. Another has drawn clothes for years and has never sat at a machine, so we start with how a garment is actually built. Someone else simply wants to make things for herself and has no particular target yet, and that is a fine place to begin too.

You also skip what you already know. If you sewed at school and remember more than you think, we find that out in the first twenty minutes and start somewhere further along. No group can do that for you.

The scheduling part, which matters more than it sounds

Group classes run on term dates. Miss two weeks and the class has moved on without you.

Because lessons are individual, we book them around your day instead. Mothers of small children book while the kids are at school. Women who work book at the weekend. Take a month off and come back, and we pick up where we stopped, because there is no cohort to keep up with. If what you want is company

Let me be honest about this, because search engines are full of people looking for a sewing club and I would rather not pretend to be one.

If your goal is a social evening, a hobby with people around a table and conversation over the noise of machines, a group is genuinely better for that. I would tell you so rather than take your money.

But if your goal is to be able to sew, to cut a pattern and finish a garment you will actually wear, one to one gets you there in far fewer hours. You are paying for attention, and in a group of eight there is one eighth of it available.

The practical part

Lessons run two to three hours, one student, in my studio on Al Reem Island. The machine, tools, patterns and fabric for your first pieces are here and included, so there is nothing to buy first. The full price breakdown is in its own article.

Classes are women only, and since there is no group, the room holds the two of us.
