Bespoke Shackets in Abu Dhabi: Custom Shirt-Jackets

A shacket is a shirt cut heavy enough to work as a light jacket: front buttons, a proper collar, roomy patch pockets, and enough body in the cloth to sit on your shoulders instead of draping like a blouse. You pull it over a dress or a plain tee and you're dressed. Clients started asking me to make them a custom shacket about two years ago, and the requests still come in most weeks.

Why women in Abu Dhabi took to it

Part of it is how the city dresses. A lot of my clients want a layer that reads as put-together but takes no effort: the thing that hangs on a hook by the door and gets grabbed on the way out. A shacket does that. It's more relaxed than a blazer and warmer than a cardigan, and it covers the arms and back without adding the heat a knit would.

The other part is how far one of them stretches. A single shacket in a good neutral goes over gym leggings for the school run and over a slip dress for dinner. Clients who travel say they can roll it into a carry-on, and it doesn't come out looking slept-in. I've made them for women in their twenties and women in their sixties, and the cut flatters both once it's built to the right body.

The layer that actually makes sense for the UAE

Anyone who lives here knows the real temperature problem isn't the heat outside. It's the cold indoors. Offices, malls, cinemas and restaurants run the AC hard, and you go from 40 degrees on the street to shivering at your desk within minutes. Then the desert evenings turn cool, especially from November to March, and a bare-armed dress that was perfect at noon isn't enough on a terrace at nine.

A shacket covers both without you carrying a bag full of options. It's light enough that you won't overheat crossing a car park, and structured enough to keep the AC off your shoulders once you're inside. I tell clients to think of it as the local version of a trench: the piece that lives in your car and rescues you. Where shop-bought shackets go wrong

The shacket is having a moment, so every rack has one. If you've gone looking for a good shirt jacket in Abu Dhabi, you've probably run into the same thing my clients describe: "oversized" on a hanger becomes "shapeless" on a real person. The fit problems sit in the same four places every time:

• Shoulders. This is the one that ruins the whole thing. A seam that drops halfway to your elbow makes you look smaller and slumped. Too narrow and you can't lift your arms. The shoulder has to end where your shoulder actually ends.
• Length. Most ready-made shackets are cut for a 175 cm frame. On a shorter woman they hit mid-thigh and swamp her; a touch too cropped and the piece rides up over the hips. A few centimetres either way changes the whole look.
• Sleeves. Either long enough to hide your hands, or so wide they flap. Sleeve length and cuff width are easy to get right when they're cut for you.
• The overall box. A shacket should be relaxed, not square. With no shaping through the body it turns into a cardboard box with buttons, and no amount of nice fabric saves it.

None of this is the fault of the style. It's the fault of one pattern being asked to fit thousands of different women.

Fabrics that behave in this climate

A shacket needs cloth that breathes but still holds a shape. Too soft and it collapses into a shirt; too stiff and it feels like armour in the heat. The ones I reach for again and again:

• Cotton twill. The workhorse. Enough weight to give the collar and pockets structure, still cool to wear, and it only looks better with age.
• Linen and linen blends. The obvious UAE choice for the warmer months. Pure linen creases, which some women love and some don't, so I often use a linen-cotton blend that keeps the breathability and calms the wrinkles.
• Light washed twill and denim. A softer, lived-in hand that's lovely for weekends. The wash takes the stiffness out while the weave keeps the shape.
• Tencel and viscose blends. When someone wants more drape and a little sheen, these fall beautifully and stay cool against the skin.

What I steer people away from is anything heavy or synthetic that traps heat. You'd only ever wear it in the AC, and then it defeats the point. We choose the exact cloth together, and I keep a running list of where to find the good stuff around town.

Every shacket I make starts with your measurements, not a size label. We sit down, I take a full set of numbers, and we talk about how you'll actually wear it: over dresses, over gym kit, to the office, on the plane. That decides the length, the room through the body, and how the collar sits.

From there I draft a pattern to your figure and cut the first version. Most shackets need one fitting; if the design is more fitted or the fabric is tricky, we do two. I fix the shoulders and length on you, in the room, so what you take home sits right the first time you put it on.
